While it's easily one of the most enjoyable installments in the MCU, Avengers: Endgame is anything but straightforward. Filled with time travel, space aliens, doppelgangers from the past, and a whole mess of magic space rocks, there are plenty of moments in the film that are simply confusing. Fortunately, if there's any part of the movie that makes you scratch your head, just wait five minutes. Chances are good someone involved in the production will give an interview that attempts to straighten it all out.
Case in point, sibling filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo got candid with Business Insider about the Endgame scene featuring a past version of the otherwise dead Norse God Loki. While Iron Man, Ant-Man, Professor Hulk, and Captain America return to New York City in 2012 to collect the Tesseract and Loki's scepter, which held the Space Stone and the Mind Stone, respectively, Loki swiftly grabs the Tesseract and escapes Thor's custody through a portal. Once he's gone, that's pretty much the last anyone sees of Loki in Avengers: Endgame.
So, what went down? Where is Loki now?
According to co-director Joe Russo, Loki is still dead in the core Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline; his capturing of the Space Stone in 2012 doesn't reverse his Infinity War death at the hands of Thanos. But he is alive in a different pocket of the multiverse. Loki snatching the Stone and beaming away created a unique timeline. That more or less falls in line with the conversation between Professor Hulk and the Ancient One, when the two met to discuss him borrowing the Time Stone. Essentially, Loki's escape with the Space Stone was significant enough to cause the central timeline to break off into a branched reality.
The filmmaker explained:
"Loki, when he teleports away with the [Space] Stone, would create his own timeline. It gets very complicated, but it would be impossible for [Cap] to rectify the timeline unless he found Loki. The minute that Loki does something as dramatic as take the Space Stone, he creates a branched reality."
Now, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers did wind up getting their hands on the Space Stone by utilizing the last of their available Pym Particles to travel to 1970, steal the Space Stone from S.H.I.E.L.D., and then snag a few more vials of Particles from Hank Pym's lab so they could return home again. This allowed them to fulfill their time heist mission and load up their own Infinity Gauntlet in the year 2023 to revive the heroes who were killed at the end of Infinity War.
But that didn't fix the problem of there being a Loki somewhere out there with the Space Stone he stole in 2012. The final moments of Endgame saw Cap returning all six Infinity Stones to their rightful places and times. And in the case of the Space Stone, he took that one back to the S.H.I.E.L.D. base in 1970, not to New York in 2012. It's confusing, like Russo mentioned, but the truth of the matter is that taking the Tesseract from and returning it to 1970 doesn't affect Loki snagging it in 2012, at least not according to the time travel standards by which Endgame operates. Keep watching the rest of the video to hear the Endgame directors confirm what really happened to Loki!

Another detail is that when Cap goes back to return the stones to where they were taken, he does that, takes back the stones, no scepter, not cube tesseract, He only has the infinity stones in the case.
He was never evil to begin with. He was always being influenced by the mind stone, just like Clint and Selvig were. So while he hasn't redeemed himself to the point in Ragnarok, he is not under the influence of the mind stone anymore either. So at worst, he's simply an anti-villain, that has some family issues. He's the "god of mischief" - not the "goddess of death" like Hela is. She wanted everyone dead, Loki tends to just enjoy causing trouble.
what if loki teleported back to thanos after he got the tesseract? and he's in that ship when thanos travel to the future.and if ever i dont think he'll get dusted btw.
bcos whats the point of mcu showing that loki escaped.
Anyone else upset that after all of the character development Loki's gone through only to be killed off, and then past loki is still a "villain"? Like ughh I mean I'm glad that he's still there but I'm just really sad that his new relationship with Thor and his redemption process was erased like nothing happened😓
This kind of just proves even further that the directors had no real knowledge of Loki and his powers and just had him killed off. That's not how Loki would have made a last stand or last attempt against Thanos. The movies would have been so much better with Joss Whedon.
They said that if you take away an infinity stone from a certain dimension/timeline to another, it will create a sort of a cosmic upset thing... but tell me about the aftermath of endgame where not just one but all infinity stones are lost, what cosmic catastrophe awaits?
I strongly believe we are now in the multiserve saga of Marvel and Thor has a fair amount of storyline left, with that being said how good would thor really be without a loki apperance? Same for the hulk. There is a fair % of storyline that involves the multiverse. Hulk. Thor. An loki. Just my thoughts. Some of our beloved heros will merge once again to fight evil.
Every time they travel to a new place they made a new timeline… That’s the only way logically it could work. The only person that they really needed to take the stones back to was the sorceress supreme because He promised to…they would’ve saved all of those other timelines from Thanos by taking one of the stones from those timelines.
I am so confused with this timeline thing. Gamora is back alive when she was supposed to be dead. That means some1 cld go back in time to bring the earlier blackwidow back too right n yet they kept saying They cldnt bring her back. If Gamora is back so maybe they cld get Tony back too 😜
I don't understand how Captain America came back in the same timeline as an old man. The young Captain America and the old Captain America was living in the same timeline just throws out the time travel logic the movie wanted us follow.
To be fair, Loki only ever wanted Odin's love.
When he met Thanos, he never had true time without the Mind Stone by his side (aside from when the Avengers had it, but that was only to mess with their heads and it stayed in close range of him). This means that it was most likely set by Thanos to amplify his jealousy of Thor and extend his already large ambitions.
We'll certainly have an evil Loki, just not 2012 Loki, probably prisoner Loki from the start of Dark World. - But free.
Loki does create another timeline.
How to fix this?
Now cap was in the past, so he can do something about that as he know things beyond everyone in that timeline. Maybe we just don't know about it. Maybe the movies loki, black widow deal with this and may end up putting back the space stone to the exact time where it was misplaced and erase the created reality.(they could use dr. Strange or ancient one for this too)
As far as I know it was stated that it will be before the event of the first movie of thor and I dont know if they'll go for this one but loki revive being a good kid he even join the young avengers so maybe this is how he get back
Marc O. I agree with you on this I don’t believe he is dead and I hope they make a avengers five and Loki is in it and becomes avenger with his big brother by his side and we get more Thor and Loki love ❤️
After Steve returns the stones, he could just go back to that time when Loki sees the stone and snag it instead, as it skids across the floor. The 2019 Avenger team will wonder where it is and go back to the 20s just as they did before. Then Steve transports back to the Avengers base and drops it off. No new timeline created, no escaped Loki.
Who would want a loki series about Loki but removing all of the character development since avengers 1, same goes for putting new gamora in guardians 3, it’s just never going to be the same and they might as well be dead still
I'm calling it. Travel between the different universes (timelines) will be a major plot point in the future movies. Hopefully after Doctor Doom is introduced we can get a Secret Wars movie where the the regular universe and the ultimate universe collide.
